In this sermon, Reverend O.G. Hill returns to the question Jesus asked at the Pool of Bethesda: “Wilt thou be made whole?” The man had lived with his infirmity for thirty-eight years. When Jesus approached him, the man began explaining why he could not reach the water—but Jesus had not asked for an explanation. He asked whether the man was ready to be made whole. Drawing from John 5 and the healing of the ten lepers in Luke 17, Pastor Hill preaches about the power of Christ to heal the body, restore the spirit, and reach beyond the circumstances that have held us for years. The man at Bethesda was told to rise and walk. The ten lepers were cleansed as they went. Yet only one returned to worship and give thanks. This message asks each of us to look beyond outward appearances. A person can look whole and still carry brokenness within. What is the difference between your spirit, soul, and body—and which one is leading your life? In this sermon, Reverend O.G. Hill explains why the soul and spirit are not the same. The soul carries our thoughts, emotions, and individuality, while the spirit is the inward person that knows God. The body, meanwhile, must be brought into submission and presented to God. In Part Two of “Spirit, Soul & Body,” Reverend O.G. Hill continues his teaching on the threefold nature of man. What does it mean to be a 61 royal priesthood according to 1 Peter 2:9? Reverend O.G. Why do we sometimes find ourselves doing the very things we hate? In “A Vision of Grace,” Reverend O.G. Hill examines the struggle Paul describes in Romans 7. The inward person desires to obey God, yet another law is at work in the flesh. This conflict leads Paul to cry out, “O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” The law reveals what is already within us. Like sunlight entering a dark room and exposing dust that was there all along, God’s commandment brings sin into view. It shows us our condition and reminds us that willpower alone cannot make us righteous. But the sermon does not end with Paul’s struggle. Reverend Hill connects Romans 7 with John’s vision in Revelation 5. No one in heaven or earth was worthy to open the sealed book, and John began to weep. Then he was told to look again: the Lion of the tribe of Judah had prevailed. John looked and saw the Lamb who had been slain. That is the vision of grace. Grace does not give us permission to remain as we are. Grace finds us in our helpless condition, turns our hearts away from sin, and points us to Jesus Christ—the only One worthy and able to deliver us.
